On December 6, 1759, a group of Germantown citizens meeting at the Green Tree Tavern decided that a school should be built for the children of Germantown. The President and his cabinet found safety from this disease at the “Germantown Union School,” known as the Germantown Academy. The President and his Cabinet were not running from British soldiers as they did during the occupation of Philadelphia in 1777 but from a deadly disease known as Yellow Fever. ![]() In the autumn of 1793, President George Washington was forced to leave Philadelphia.
